Finding Faith When the Path Isn't Clear

Being an athlete teaches you about uncertainty in ways that reshape your entire view of faith. Playing any sport, you learn quickly that no matter how many plays you've practiced or games you've won, each moment brings its own kind of unknown.

In hockey, like in faith, timing is everything. Sometimes you're in position, stick on the ice, ready for a pass that doesn't come. Other times, opportunities appear when you least expect them, testing whether you're prepared for the moment. This rhythm of waiting and moving, pausing and acting, it mirrors something deeper about how God works in our lives.

Luke 13:7 tells us about a gardener waiting for his fig tree to bear fruit. Three years of waiting, watching, wondering if anything would ever come from his investment. As athletes, we understand this kind of waiting. We know what it means to put in countless hours of practice, to move across the country chasing dreams, to trust that all the preparation will eventually bear fruit.

I've learned that this journey through uncertainty isn't just about reaching our goals. It's about who we become in the process. Romans 12:2 talks about being transformed by the renewing of our mind. On the ice, every practice, every game, every season shapes not just our skills but our character. The same is true in our faith journey.

When we face uncertainty, whether it's about playing time, team dynamics, or life beyond sports, we have a choice. We can let anxiety flood our minds like in the moments before a big game, or we can trust in God's perfect timing, knowing that even when we can't see the whole play developing, He can.

Trust isn't about having all the answers. It's about staying ready, remaining faithful to the process, believing that every delay and every change holds purpose. Just as a good coach sees potential we might miss in ourselves, God's timing often works in ways that only make sense when we look back at the full game tape of our lives.

The path of faith, like the path of an athlete, rarely moves in a straight line. It winds through seasons of waiting, periods of intense growth, moments of uncertainty that test everything we think we know. But each step, each season, each moment of questioning builds something crucial: a deeper trust in the One who sees the whole game, who knows exactly when to call each play.

So if you're standing in a season of uncertainty right now, remember: your worth isn't measured by how clearly you can see the path ahead. It's found in staying faithful to the process, trusting that even when the timing doesn't make sense to you, there's purpose in the waiting.

Because sometimes, the most important growth happens in those moments between the plays – when we're learning to trust not in our own timing, but in God's perfect plan.
